1-2 Arts & Crafts

(grades 1-2) Have fun making different kinds of projects! We will be creative using paper, tempera, crayon pastels, markers, etc. Some of your projects will be seasonal crafts. Join us for this exciting class in which you make your own unique creations. (add $10 materials fee to registration)

1-2 Jump for Joy

1-2-3-4 hop, skip, and jump for more. Join a fun and upbeat rhythms class that's fun and good for you too! We will do warm-ups, simple dances, and play exciting games with a variety of equipment. You’ll have lots of fun while you exercise, strengthen your muscles, and improve your coordination. We’ll combine music, movement, and language as we apply our active imaginations. We’ll use ribbons, scarves, hoops, balls and other apparatus that will be provided. If you love to move, this is the class for you! No experience necessary!

(grades 1-3) Come enjoy the magic of puppets! We will create all kinds of fascinating puppets. We will explore ways to make our puppets come alive, and learn how to tell stories with them. Develop your listening, speaking, reading and performance skills through the creative art of puppetry. We will makes puppets of all shapes and sizes for you to take home so that you can act out the familiar stories we perform in class each week. (add $10 materials fee to registration)

1-6 Ballet

(Grade 1-6) This is a fun introductory course for the student with little to no ballet experience. An emphasis will be placed on traditional ballet technique, with a concentration in rehearsing and performing ballet combinations. By the end of the course, the students will be able to identify and perform a wide array of ballet steps and will have been exposed to the atmosphere of a dance studio-type ballet class.(additional $10 materials fee)

2-3 Ceramics

(grades 2 -3 & 4-6) This summer ceramics class will introduce a variety of materials, concepts, techniques and is designed to challenge your imagination and abilities while providing an opportunity for creative exploration. We will learn the craft and art of clay while having fun as we develop and improve our art skills. This course will include stimulating and enjoyable clay projects for all levels of experience. A wide variety of ceramic techniques will be taught using this wonderful and magical medium including: shaping most clay into pinch pots, designing and constructing slab projects, building unique coil sculptures, vessels, hand forming magical masks, and creating our favorite foods. We will also learn about clay decoration and experiment with surface design. See you there! (add $20 materials fee to registration)

3-5 Dance, Dance, Dance!

(grades 3-5) Love to dance? Love toe tappin’ music? Then join us for some fun! Dance your socks off as you learn a variety of folk and popular dances from around the world-(Greece, Israel, Scotland, U.S.A etc.) Can’t dance? Don’t worry- we’ll teach you! There will be line, circle, country western, square, mixers, and novelty dances such as the Pata Pata, Limbo Rock, Stray Cat Strut, N.Y.N.Y, Popcorn, Virginia Reel, etc. No partners needed! No special shoes or clothing required! A great field trip to the Hollywood Bowl Open House will be included. (add $10 field trip fee to registration)

4-6 Creative Arts

(grades 4-6) Research shows that children's exposure to the arts helps to develop their spatial awareness and is extremely beneficial in academic areas such as math and science. Students will utilize a sketch book to develop drawing skills and create an art portfolio. They will learn about artists such as Matisse, O'Keefe, Van Gogh and Picasso. A variety of medium- watercolor, scratch board, chalk pastels, colored paper, and oil pastels—will be used in unique and creative ways. The basic elements of art will be meaningfully incorporated into each project. All off this will provide a well-rounded experience. Our class will culminate in an impressive Art Show during the final week, and families are invited to attend. (add $10 materials fee to registration)

4-6 Masters of Art

Learn about Picasso, Matisse, Georgia O'keefe, Seurat, and other great artists. In this class, we will create our own original works of art while imitating the styles and techniques of these great artists. We will be working in different mediums such as watercolors, pastels, crayon, and much more. We will also learn about subject matter and different movements in art history. Each person will take home a portfolio at the end of the program. So if you're interested in knowing about abstract art or how to create an assemblage this is the perfect class for you. 4-6 Toe Tappin American Dance

(grades 4-5) Here's a fun way to exercise and meet new friends! Learn fun party dances from the past (50’s, 60’s, 70’s) Stroll, Twist, Hand-Jive, Disco Hustle and more will be taught as well as current dances (country line, ie- Cowboy Hustle, Tush Push, Electric Slide and more.) Social Dances such as the Cha-Cha, Swing and Salsa will also be included as well as USA’s square and contra dances and mixers (Cotton Eye Joe, Virginia Reel, Barn Dance, etc.) No partners needed and no special shoes or clothing required. We will be our own "Mr. Henshaws" by writing our favorite authors e-mails. We will also write Expository, Narrative, and Persuasive essays. We will then publish stories via Writer's Workshop. An added focus will be reading core literature and comprehending what we read. We will use computerized assessment comprehension tools as a non-stress measure to see just how well we understand the passages we read.

COMPUTER GENIES! ADVANCE COMPUTER USING SKILLS (Advanced - grades 4-6) Students will go beyond basic computer usage. Students in this class will learn how a computer functions, and all of its components. Students will be able to identify basic components of a computer. Students will learn how to problem solve many issues like Pop-ups, how to troubleshoot if their internet is not working, and how they can customize many settings on their computer. Students will also learn how to use the many internet search engines, and other advanced skills using word processing programs, PowerPoint, Microsoft Paint and Excel spreadsheets. Also, students will learn to create abstract art using the Microsoft Paint Program. Students will be able to practice and enhance their typing skills using the Mavis typing program. COMPUTERS AND TECHNOLOGY KIDS (Expert - grades 4-6) Become a tech savvy kid in only a few weeks. Using state of the art technology, students will design their own web pages and learn internet research methods. The class goes significantly beyond the internet allowing students to create digital movies, experiment with desktop publishing, learn spreadsheets, make databases, create flash animations and be introduced to computer programming. 1 Math

(grade 1) Learn math and have fun! In this class, math concepts will be taught: reinforced and enhanced through a variety of art projects, games, word problems, and skill-building activities. This class will incorporate hands-on experience in addition, subtraction, graphing, money, patterns, telling time, and many more first grade concepts within a stimulating and cooperative learning environment. So come join us and get a head start on First Grade Math.

1-2 Math

(grade 1-2) Math in motion is more fun! Our class will strive to make math move through the topics of patterns, money, fractions, time, graphs and measurements, reviewing first grade skills and previewing some second grade subject. We will review basic math facts and develop number concepts. We will include manipulative and activities to get the students moving. So, get out of your seat and walk the number line. Use your big and small muscles to help you learn math.

(grade 3) Students in this class will review and preview Grade 3 Math California Content Standards from addition to algebraic processes. Students will understand what it really means to perform these operations through plenty of hands-on experiences including enriching math games. Logic and mathematical reasoning will spice up the class.

3-4 Problem Solving

Grade 3-4 Do you like to solve puzzles? Fascinated by mysteries? Thinking of being a crime scene investigator when you grow up? In this class students will engage in a variety of problem solving activities involving mathematics and literature while utilizing a variety of problem solving strategies including looking for patterns and guess and check. While thinking logically , critically and creatively, students will stretch their problem solving capabilities as they solve puzzles and play games in their quest to be a mighty problem solver.

4 Math

(grade 4) This course introduces students to math that is integral to fourth grade California standards. Areas of study will include whole numbers, fractions and decimals, multiplication and division, factoring, algebra concepts, expressions, equations, and geometry. Mathematical reasoning and understanding of concepts will be emphasized. Course includes homework and weekly quizzes.

5 Math

(grade 5) Students in this class will preview/review mathematics in grade five through plenty of hands-on experiences and concrete models. An emphasis will be on basics in mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Plus finding ways to make challenging word problems fun to solve, along with plenty of geometric concepts, exponentials, and a preview of pre-algebra found in middle school mathematics.

5-6 Fraction Fun

(grades 5-6) Students should have worked with fractions before in order to be successful with this course. This course begins with the basic concepts of what fractions are and how they relate to the world. As the course continues, the following areas will be covered: identifying fractions, equivalent fractions, mixed numbers & improper fractions, fractions on a number line, equivalent & reduced fractions, comparing & ordering fractions, adding fractions & mixed numbers, subtracting fractions & mixed numbers, multiplying fractions, and fractions as decimals & percents. Please note that this class does include daily homework and weekly assessments. All student work is graded. Parents will receive a “"report card"” of scores for the summer.

5-6 Math Challenge

(grade 5-6) Students should have a strong background in number concepts and should have mastered multiplication and division facts up to 12. Throughout the course, the following areas will be covered: perimeter of polygons, area of quadrilaterals, area of triangles, circumference, area of circles, probability, and adding probabilities. If time allows, we will also cover volume of rectangular prisms, volume of triangular prisms, volume of cylinders, and higher methods of probability.

5-6 Pre-Algebra

(grades 5-6) Would you like to get a head start on middle school math and explore new ways of working with numbers? If so, this class is for you! We will be using manipulatives, pictorial representations, and games to “de-mystify” algebraic thinking. If you have mastered the basic facts (i.e. 4 x 6) and would like to try something new, you are ready to be successful in this class. We will cover math patterns, logic, evaluating algebraic expressions, solving linear equations involving both positive and negative integers, and graphing. Please note that the class will involve some home practice. Several tests will be given so that the students, teacher, and parent/guardian are aware of progress made.

Other Exciting Programs

1 Jump Start

(children entering grade 1 only), students will have the same teacher all four (4) periods varying from our departmentalized program. This unique class for incoming first graders only is a course specifically designed for primary students who prefer to learn in a self-contained classroom setting throughout the entire morning. Jump Start is designed with an enriching academic program consisting of language arts, math, science and the arts. Research tells us that children learn to read by being read to. Fostering a love for books is one of the primary objectives of this class. We will collect information about stories we have read in class and enter it on data graphs that can be compared and contrasted. Students will have an opportunity to become authors themselves as we create our own books. Also, they will read in small groups at their level. To ensure success in first grade, Jump Start is a great choice for children who need extra exposure to kindergarten skills. Join us for summer fun at CSUN

If you enjoy games of strategy and intellectual challenge, or you just want to learn to play chess, this class is for you! Beginners and experienced players are welcome to compete in the chess tournament. Lastly, students with parental permission may bring their own chess board to class; however, the student is solely responsible for the game.

3-6 Conditioning With Coach D

(grades 3-6) This class is designed for all levels of fitness and athletic ability. Have you ever played on a team and wished you were faster? OR have you watched a game and wished that you could do what you saw others doing? If so, this is the class for you! In this class, using a variety of games and activities designed around success, we will work on agility and endurance resulting in self-esteem building and the promotion of a healthy life style. Each student will examine their current level of activity and set personal goals for the summer. Coach D has coached for many years in soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, and track in ages from elementary to high school. Come join our team and increase your fitness level.

(grades 3-6) Summer cooking classes at CSUN are here! Students will learn basic cooking techniques, food science, nutrition, food safety and preparing delicious snacks and meals from a real chef! Science experiments they can eat! This course will teach your child how to create healthy meals and to combine all of the disciplines: science, health, nutrition, math, and many other life skills into one exciting class! Cooking classes are for children ages 9-11 and each student will be taught how to prepare healthy snacks, breakfasts, and lunches. (add $20 materials fee to registration)

4-6 Leadership

(grades 4-6) Are you a leader or want to know the secret of becoming one? Have you always wanted to run for school office, but are too shy or don't know how? Here's your chance to learn about the fundamentals of leadership. We will discuss the traits of what it takes to be a great leader and the stepping stones to running for office. We will learn about fundraising, campaigning, and speech-making through a variety of different activities, projects, and writing assignments.

4-6 Puzzle Makers

(grades 4-6) Kids love puzzles! Puzzle Makers will create their own puzzles based on their experiences and interests. Riddles, doublets, bubble puzzles and Sudoku, brain teasers, crosswords, cryptograms, and tessellations are included, as well as a jigsaw puzzle from any favorite picture. We will use a variety of craft materials, and each child will design and make their own box to store their puzzles. We will explore the history of puzzles, and encourage children to suggest new and different type of puzzles we can create. This is a brain work, hands-on, thinking course for creative kids! This course is designed for students in grades 4th to 6th, or high achieving 3rd graders. (add $10.00 materials fee to registration).

5-6 Soccer-Frisbee Golf

(grades 5-6) This non-competitive course will teach the basic skills and rules of soccer and frisbee golf. Teamwork and cooperation will be stressed while getting good exercise. If you want to stay in shape or just have some fun, this class is for you. They will develop cooperative skills while learning about the importance of a beginning, middle and end of a play. Student will be involved in many theater games and activities to enrich their acting experience, and prepare them for a fantastic show at the end of the program. Since this class is focused on performing, students should be present all five weeks, especially the fifth week.

(grades1-2) Come join us as we create handmade cards (greeting, thank you, etc.), write our own collection of fun poems, as well as put together an All About Me Book that we'll bind and make into an actual book for you and your parents to cherish for years to come! In addition, your child will learn reading skills to become a more effective and confident reader and speller. Your child will learn phonics skills to strengthen decoding skills. With no need for sets, costumes or memorization, we will read scripts together, improving your oral reading and listening skills while having fun! You can also begin to learn the craft of the scriptwriter, the unsung hero behind every popular TV show, movie or play. Thinking and writing skills will be sharpened as you communicate each story to the audience in an entertaining way.

RESEARCHERS WANTED! (grades 3-4) Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? Do you want to be a teacher, a doctor, or an athlete? Let's explore your career choice together by learning how to put together a research paper! You will learn how to gather information through different resources, such as books, the internet, and even learning to develop interviewing skills. You will learn to gather information and put together a research paper on your career choice through a review of the writing process as well as addressing reading and writing CA standards. Everyone will dress-up and give an oral presentation summarizing their career choice in front of the class and parents are welcome to join us for the last week of presentations!

(grades 3-5) Reading and Writing together - join us for experiences with this dynamic duo! We’ll sample reading selections from a number of genres: mysteries, adventure stories, biographies, magazine, newspaper articles, and biographies. We’ll use each sample to build our comprehension skills, followed by opportunities to awaken the creative writer in each of us. We’ll learn good ways to craft interesting paragraphs, short stories, and essays in each genre we have read. At the end of class, each student will have a portfolio of work, ready to be shared with others.

4-6 Marine Biology

(grades 4-6) Come and join us on an exciting ocean voyage of discovery! You will begin exploring how oceans were formed and the amazing organisms that lived in ancient oceans. Learn to think like a scientist as you explore amazing ocean creatures, from the tiniest plankton to the largest creature that ever lived on earth- the Blue Whale. In addition, you will learn about the unique characteristics of the ocean's amazing animals such as sharks, stingrays, and the giant squid. Some of the activities that you will be involved in include: scientific explorations, plankton designing, and examining marine specimens in class and the CSUN marine wet lab. Fascinating videos on marine life will be shown. There will be an exciting field trip to the Cabrillo Aquarium Aquatic Nursery where you will learn about the growth and care of marine organisms.
